4 November 2005 - Fake RuneScape servers
Greetings, adventurers!
Unfortunately we have been made aware that a small number of people have created false RuneScape servers.
These fake servers may look almost identical to our own (at a glance), however we must emphasise that they are in no way linked to RuneScape or Jagex, and are very dangerous to use for the following reasons:
-Firstly if you enter your password into one it will quite possibly be stolen. This is because you are actually entering your password into someone elses fake server and that person can then take your REAL account. Please remember never enter your password ANYWHERE except RuneScape.com
-Even if you use a different password it is pretty risky choosing to run software written by known hackers! You risk a keylogger on your machine, again stealing you real account!
-Be wary of fake screenshots of the game, it's always been possible to use a paint package to produce fake screenshots. These fake servers are another way that hackers will try to use to deceive players. Just because you see something in a screenshot, it does not mean it's genuine! Unless you've seen it in the REAL game yourself don't trust it.
We would therefore like to warn our users to be very careful of fake RuneScape servers, and point out that they definitely not what they seem! Whilst at first glance they may briefly appear to work, it very quickly becomes apparent that they do the bare minimum to let the client run, just enough to trick you into entering your password. In fact pretty much the entire game is missing, and you can do little more than walk around. (and in fact even that doesn't appear to work securely).
For more advice please read the "Security Tips", these can be found on the RuneScape.com homepage under the "Information and Advice section". Please also keep an eye on the Customer Support news and the Forums. We will keep you updated using these means of communication.
