emm, quoting bits from an easy i did last term i got a 18/20 for it... i hate this stubject...
Regions have always been important to the global economy throughout the industrial phase of human society, this hasn’t and won’t change. The only thing that will change is the regions location. This change is down to better communications in the form of telecommunications, and also with “maritime shipping costs tending to decline, as freighter capacities increase…” (Tavel, 1980, P 77)...
...This new urban corridor runs up the eastern edge of Asia, from Singapore and up along the coast until you reach Japan. This area is starting to become highly industrialised and many of the Multi National Companies are choosing to open factories in this area. The reason that they are choosing to do this is due to the lower rates of pay for the work force. “Nike employees 8,000 people directly, while a further 75,000 people make the most of their shoes… wages range from 23 pence an hour in China to 46 pence an hour in Thailand.” (Madeley, 2000, P 106)
A point should be made, that it is not the whole of the country that is becoming industrial, but just the city areas. For example in china while cities may appear to be affluent the country as a whole is not that well off. This is because people who live in the countryside still struggle to make enough money and or food to survive on. In contrast people in the Chinese cities like Hong Kong are affluent to some degree because they have lots of job opportunities and careers that they can follow. This means the population is starting to become displaced.
An Example of regions still remaining important and just changing location comes from a articles in the People Daily, “Official figures showed that China produced 39.36 million sets of colour TV sets last year, accounting for 29 percent of the world's total, while 14.43 million washing machines were produced, 24 percent of the world's total.
The country also maintains a leading place in the textile industry, turning out 7.33 tons of silk annually, or 70 percent of the world's total yield.” (Daily, 2006, Online)
