Hey, I'm writing an essay and thought it would be fun if some of you could help me brainstorm.

The topic: "Everyone has been exposed to ethnic and racial insults. Write an essay discussing how the media- movies, tv, books, and/or music - contribute to the growth of prejudicial language."

This is after reading a boring short essay on the origins of insults...bleh.

Here are the topics that I've already come up with:

- Imus
- Rap music
- Joe Biden on Obama (tough)

Thanks in advance. wub.gif

Virginia Tech -> They made a big deal about how he was Asian, as if that mattered.

Also, the media covers stories about businesses/universities that don't hire enough people of a certain race, even if it is true that the majority of the best qualified individuals were of the same race.

Links:

Ivy League Coaches (6th paragraph)

Harvard Coaches (Just heard about this in the news)

This is probably a bad site...

This might be too broad... it's about racial prejudice in general

Duke lacrosse players rape trial

This is right on topic, but its about Canada in particular

**Ahah! This is good, and your teacher will love you for using a .gov site!

**...And another good one smile.gif

hey drumr, i also definitely think that you should look at movies.

i know that movies play a huge part in just about everyone's life, and there may be subconscious insults or some things like that. Also, there may be double meanings, etc.

id say definitely check the movies...

good stuff cmaf

You could include when the journalise (sensationalist) style of writing came about too. You can pinpoint it to the year 1989 and the fall of the Berlin wall. As soon as the cold war was over, people needed something new to fear - so why not the murderers, rapists and different ethnicities.

Another good thing to do is watch the news. Watch how many criminals show on it happen to be of a different ethnicity than caucasian. I can guarantee the the majority will be anything other than white.

i think if you do rap music , if you could call it music, you should think of songs that say racial slurs that the races don't want to be said but they say it them selves
