IPB Image Guide for installing and configuring mIRC
By Fishermanim

Introduction
This guide will explain how to install and configure the IRC (Internet Relay Chat) client mIRC. The use of IRC is to chat with you're friends and other people instantly in large or small channels, with the ability to create your own channels easily and join others as well.
This guide will try to make mIRC as easy to use as the client built into SwiftSwitch; it will log into the same server and channels, but will have the added advantages of mIRC.
I will perform this guide on a Windows XP SP2 system, with Internet explorer 7 and use the latest version of mIRC, v6.31 (built for Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2k/XP/Vista).
Getting the program
First of all you will have to download the latest version of mIRC from the company's official site. Here's a link straight to the download page: http://www.mirc.com/get.html
Note: This download is completely legal and free for use on any computer. You can find the exact terms of use in the mIRC site (http://www.mirc.com/).
Installing
After downloading the program and saving it wherever, run the .exe file and follow the instructions. Generally you can't go wrong here but here are some installment tips if you are only planning on using mIRC on the swiftIRC.net network (the one SwiftSwitch uses and is commonly used by a lot of Runescape channels):
  • Don't install in any non-default locations
  • Don't install the Settings file, Servers list and URLs List. There is no use for them and thy only take space when running the program.

Configuring
After you finish installing the program, run it. This program is sophisticated enough for you to program easily what exactly you want it to do and not do. For ease of access, here are my suggestions. If you have other ideas, read the manuals to learn how to do them or ask for help in the mIRC help channels in the swiftirc.net network (#mIRC):
1. When you start mIRC this window should pop up each time. Click 'Continue' (marked in red) every time. Eventually, after about 20 days the 'Continue' button will take a few seconds to become enabled. After the whole 30 days pass it will take a few seconds for it to become enabled, and after you click it a similar window will pop up and you'll have to do the same for it.

2. When you start mIRC for the first time, the mIRC options window should pop up. Here begins the configuration. First of all in the 'connect' tab of the menu on the side fill the 4 boxes marked in red with your information (alternative is optional). (Note about nicks: you can have any nickname you want, unless it's taken. I suggest you find one you like which is available and register it by writing in the server window "/register [password] [email]". A confirmation email will be sent to that email along with instructions.)

3. Now click the "servers" tab (marked in red) and click the 'add' button (marked in blue) and write the swiftIRC.net server information there (marked in orange). You can use any server (the server names are listed here: http://swiftirc.net/index.php?page=servers). I used the Netherlands server since it’s the closes for me, you can try out which connects for you.
IPB Image
4. Now you should double-click the new swiftIRC option listed in the IRC server list.
IPB Image
5. Next go to the option tab (marked in red) and make sure only the 4 checkboxes: Connect on startup, Reconnect on disconnection, Move to top of list on connect and Check for timed out connection (marked in blue) and checked. Now click the perform button, check the Enable perform on connect checkbox (marked in purple) and write down the info in the perform commands (Note: change the [password] to your identified nickname password). I wrote down for it to join the forbidden channel, but you can choose whichever you want.
IPB Image
6. Now go to the IRC tab in the side menu (marked in red) and check the 8 checkboxes marked in blue, the rest should be unchecked – except the 'Whois' one.
IPB Image
7. Now go to the Messages tab (marked in red), enable the timestamp and change the format to "[HH:nn:ss]", and enter any desired quit messages - which will show when you quit a channel (marked in blue).
IPB Image
8. Now go to the Options tab under Display in the side menu (marked in red) and click the Windows button and fill as marked in orange, next click the Tray button and check all the boxes.

9. Finally click OK. Now open the favorites window by clicking on the tool button marked in red, and uncheck the Popup favorites on connect checkbox (marked in blue), and click OK.
IPB Image
10. Now open the Address Book window by clicking on the toolbar button marked in red, now click on the nick colors marked in blue and then check the Enable checkbox marked in orange and click the Add button.
IPB Image
11. Now fill the add window with the desired nick color and his mode (Note: Channel modes are the level which the nick has control in that channel. OP / admin / owner marked with '@' being operator, Half-OP marked with '%' being a slight less access than an OP and Voiced marked with '+' which has no access features, but allows you to talk when a channel is in mute). I used the colors used in the SwiftSwitch client, but you can use whichever you want. Just fill in as shown in this example window – do the other modes.
IPB Image
(note: Make sure that when you're down adding all the access level you want, OPs are above Half-OPs and those over voiced and those over regular in order for the coloring to work properly.

Test run
Now, you're finished installing and configuring, restart the program and let the magic work. What should happen is like so: The about window will popup, click continue. Now you should hear some beeps and in a few seconds a chat window will pop up on top of all – resize it to fit wherever you want it and enjoy!
FAQs
  • Is mIRC and IRC safe for use? – yes it is. As long as you chat with people you generally know, don't open suspicious links and don't give out any personal information. (I would also suggest you don't use your Runescape password as your IRC password).
  • What else can I do with mIRC? – You can check out the help files and the lots of mIRC tutorials on the net. Also you can utilize the mIRC help channels in swiftIRC.net (#mIRC).
  • The program won't connect to the server when I start it up. – Go back to mIRC options and check if you entered the info correctly as described in number 3 of the configuration part of this guide. If it still doesn't work, try switching to a different server. You can find the list of swiftIRC.net servers here: <a href="http://swiftirc.net/index.php?page=servers" target="_blank">http://swiftirc.net/index.php?page=servers</a>.
  • For any other questions, ask the people in #mIRC or #IRC or #IRChelp. All these channels have people who know at least some IRC and can most probably help you.

Awsome guide fisher, add #Msl as a scripting help channel smile.gif

Also a note, maybe tell people how to switch off DCC, DCC is very very rarely used by most people and its possible to receive virusses from accepting DCC's

In step 5 where you replace the password with your identified nick name password, where do I find/enter my identified nickname password?
Bliz
you replace the [password] with the password you used in step 2 wink.gif
Mangr0v3
How do I set it to autoconnect to 2 servers?
Otter
It's missing, and I want to read it.

Anyways, how can I set up auto-id on mIRC?
Benjy
It's still there, you just can't see it.
In answer to your question.
Alt + O -> Connect -> Options -> Perform. -> Enable Perform on Connect
Then, in that box write
/ns id <password>
/join #channel

There is only one worthy channel.

Barak, you might want to fix an error if I'm not mistaken, on step 5 in the 'perform' options it says "/identify [password]" in the picture. I'm almost positive that the correct command is "/msg NickServ IDENTIFY [password]" wink.gif

/Identify works fine as well.
Matthew
I tried it and it said something about an invalid command.
Maarten
It only works on the Swiftirc server.

Whenever I try and join, it changes my name to unknown(random numbers) why is this?

Because you need to register your nick to do so type this when your in a server:

/ns register password password email email where it says password, make your designated password, same as email (Must be valid so you can confirm account).

The problem isn't cause because the nick is unregistered... but rather because It's already registered by somebody else. And he protected it.
You don't have to register your nick, but if you don't somebody else could use it (and later on register it) so you can't use it.

That's why you need to find an unregistered Nick by switching with the /Nick command. Once you've found an unregistered nick you want, do the /ns register command.

And then all you need to do is Identify yourself every time you log in, using either the "/ns Identify" command or using the SwiftIRC alias "/identify".
