What I do is bookmark the important sites, then they'll always show up.
Actually, in the realm of auto filling in the address bar, Google Chrome does a much better job. The best thing about Chrome's auto fill feature is the search engines. I type "g", then push tab, and now I can enter in a search term for google and push enter. Same with wikipedia (type in e for the en.wiki..., tab, and search).
But I've gone back to FF3 recently.
I think I know what you are talking about, and you can do that with Firefox as well

Go to www.google.com, and right-click in the search bar. Click Add Keyword for search engine, or something along the lines of that, sorry my FF is dutch. The name you enter is the name as which it will show up in your favorites bar, the keyword could just be anything you want. For example if I put it "G", this is what I do to search for cookies on google; "g cookies". And it will redirect me to a search for cookies. That works just as good, if not better
