Here's the deal. I had finally constructed a Mayor's Statue when all of a sudden SimCity 4 randomly shuts down. Now I have to start from the tiny little village I started with.

If it was...what would you suggest me?

That doesn't matter at all. The disc is not important at ALL to the game. All you need it for is verification that you actually own the game. The data is all on your computer, the disc being scratched would have nothing to do with it.

and I do have it in...but when I get to mayor mode...at some random point the computer shuts down the game completely!

Hmm... about the RAM thing... having quadriplicaded ram is plain useless without a good CPU, and if you have a suckish cpu, go and get a better one. The "minimal hardware requirements", written right behind the game box is just not use for you, i bet. the game requires, to run decently, atleast 2Ghz of CPU to just run... I call it "crash" wink.gif

It was able to handle a city with 100k population, but in other cities it randomly closes.

(the 100k population was a city file imported from another computer that lagged horribly, then I raised the population on this computer which went just fine. Other cities can't even surpass 1k pop)

(clearly the 100k city requires TONS more RAM space than the 1k pop city, in case that confuses you)

Have you tried re-installing? It might be a corrupted file or something.

I have (unintentionally) tried that!
Maarten
How about updating it to the newest version, or if you have, try NOT updating it to a newer version?

I know that making a backup copy of the disk is possible, legal and legit... try out using Alcohol 120%.
