Full Version: Ethernet cable problem

Alright. So I got a 360 for Christmas which I was really happy about. Now I want to get Xbox Live, but I have a dilemma. The Ethernet cable that came with the Xbox is roughly around 8ft long. From my router to my room, it's roughly 50ft, take or add a few feet. I'm just wondering how I can hook up my Ethernet cable to my 360 that's in my room. I'm not sure if there's a special extension cord I can use or not. I know the standard extension cords are mainly used for other cords with prongs. I'm not sure if I can use a Usb extension cord for this or not. I'm not sure if I should get an extension cord or just a new Ethernet cable. Either way, I'm going to have to go buy something for this hook up more than likely. Does anyone have any advice on what I should do?
Matt
Well there arn't exactly extension cords, but their are couplers. (Search "RJ-45 coupler")

You could use a couple and attach the 8ft cable to a longer one to make it reach.. or you could just got out and buy a 50ft cable. The 360 wireless antenna is an alright idea as well - assuming you have a wireless network in our house already, but it really isn't the best quality.

Well, if I bought the coupler, then I'd have to buy another Ethernet cable as well. Not sure if I'd do that when I can just buy a long Ethernet cable. I'm just not sure if there are any over 50ft or not. If not, then I may do what you said Matt and buy the coupler since it's not that expensive at all and buy another Ethernet cable and hook it up like that. Thanks Matt.

Here

Although $100 busks is a bit to pricey for me. Just an option you might wanna try as a last resort if you can't get the wire. wink.gif

it's cheaper to buy to cable. The sell longer cables that that and they have couplers like Matt said. I used to have to do that in an old house because of where my desk was positioned and where the cable comes out of the wall. Don't spend that much money when you can spend much less. smile.gif

u can get a ethernet cable upto 120ft, but for cables that long u also need boosters to re-strengthen the signal. but yes 50ft'ers defiently exist since i have one for myself cause of the router and where my comp is located.
Maarten
By the way, you don't have to use the cable that came with the 360, it doesn't matter what you use. You could just get a regular cable and plug it in, so you don't need to get a coupler or something.
