I bought an ethernet cord to connect my xbox 360 and router together to replace the laggy wireless one I got for christmas. I still see that when I play online games, I still lag. Which pisses me off because its a direct connection.
anything i can do with my router settings or xbox settings to make it better?

Blame the other players for lagging up your game, not yourself.

I'm afraid that doesn't help with my problem, infact, it just made it worse.

What is:
a) Your Internet connection speed?
b) Your router?

Well, if both wired and wireless lag, then what is the conclusion? Your connection is crap. Give some info on that.

I am not going to conclude that my connection is crap because everything else works fine, wii, computers etc.
It's a Linksys wireless 2.3ghz router.
This might clear up my connection speed

Could it also be that the game disk is smudged, and the console could be having trouble reading it?

Okay, two likely things strike me then. Couple more questions:
Are you playing on an HDTV? If so, which display settings and what size screen?
Which games are you playing? Do they also lag in single player?

I am not playing on an HDTV, I think i might know what you are thinking, but it is not that kind of lag, i know defiantly that it is online play lag.
I play NBA 2k9 and Halo 3, those are the ones I've played that lagged since I bought the ethernet cord. It only lags in multiplayer mode

Then at a guess, you've probably got multiple things running through the ethernet on your router which'll be causing it to lag.
Whilst I can't comment on NBA2k9, Halo 3 joins games based on location - so you've generally got less duress on everyone's connection. Further to this, if there's no lag in single player, there's unlikely to be a problem with either the console or the game disk - and if you're not playing through HDMI then the console can handle any of the games on it, if loudly. Plus neither of those games are a high graphical workload for the 360.
If you've not got any other things wired to the router, it simply is as Mark said that the problem's with everyone else.

Well, I there is one computer directly connected to the router, that might have something to do with it. And If a few other wireless connections would interfere, then that might have something to do with it. I will keep that in mind next time I play.
Thanks Rob.
