I've had my laptop for a little over a year, it's working great. However I had a problem with my charger, it wasn't working. I went to geek squad and the nice lady said I should get a universal charger. I got the universal charger and everything was working great until recently. It will be plugged in and not charging.

I don't know if it is a motherboard problem, a battery problem, or a charger problem. It's been plugged in for about 2 days at 0% and not charging. I really can't give any more information then that.

If someone could tell me what the problem is, I would appreciate it. I will try to answer questions as best as I can if you have any.

Thanks.

I'm guessing your battery no longer holds a charge... if that's the case, there's a problem with the battery itself, not the charger or the motherboard.

Basically just to run a test to isolate the battery, try to find someone with the same laptop or battery. Swap batteries. If the other battery is charged, then the problem is your battery. If the battery doesn't hold the charge, then there is a bad connection. Although the connection would probably cause your computer to not be able to function at all.

So I'm going with the battery problem.

Take the battery out and just run it from the cord. If it works then the battery might be dead.

It looks like your computer is running, right?

Well that's a relief to hear. How sure are you of that though?

Good to see that you are going with the battery problem too.

It works because its from the cord.

Not to say I'm an expert or anything... I just used my knowledge of Laptops and trial and error.

If there was a problem with the motherboard, the laptop wouldn't run.
If there was a problem with the charger, the laptop would die out once it reached 0%.
If there was a problem with the battery, it wouldn't hold charge and it doesn't, but still carries on working.

Wow, stop giving people computer advice. It looks like you have no idea what you're talking about.
Of course it will work when you run it from the cord, when you plug the cord the computer just takes the power from the cord, the unused power that remains is then used to charge the battery, so when plugged in it wont use the power from the battery at all. What you said would never be an indication of a dead battery, it doesn't make any sense at all anyway.

I would also say your battery has died, if you're still under warranty try and call customer support or take it back to the store. If not, you should try to find someone with the same battery, so you can make sure the problem is really the battery before you buy a new one, because I think they are quite expensive.

Could be two things really.
Either your battery is bad, as everyone else seems to insist. wink.gif

Or the lovely place that the battery plugs into is bad IE: Your motherboard. "Plugged in, not charging" can also mean that the computer does not detect the battery at all. See if you get the exact same message when you have the battery out.

Looks like either the battery is dead, or the battery connectors. try wiping them.
