Please, for the good of all of Runecrypt, please bring back email activations, and Admin approval. The spam and advertisement bots are out of control, pesky, and just plain annoying. I want to have a regular person, not a person wanting to translate a Pron site, or a woman asking if they like their website about health pills. It's got to happen.
Spire
oh those women, always ruining good sites.

I support.
Maarten
They are out of control? No they're not. I don't really see why they're so annoying, what's the problem? They're usually gone within 10-20 mins. :S
(But we are looking into ways to expand the moderating team atm)

Besides, even with e-mail activation we have bots. The problem hasn't changed when we switched the activation form, but not too long ago the bots stopped using the help me forum and started posting on others.

Some make people lol, so I don't really mind 'em that much. A pandemic of bots would be quite annoying, but it hasn't happened yet.

At first it was funny, but it's just plain annoying now. Can't someone just add one of those "write down the text in the picture above" thingies? I really have no idea if that sort of thing still works though eep.gif

I just want to say one thing in this topic (it's 1:18am so I'll keep it short and hopefully understandable).

Topics that bots make are usually always in the forum games and they usually always have a thread title which gives their game up. If you don't have the self control to NOT click on these threads than you really should not complain about the bots - rather you should work on your own problems which need to be dealt with.

The issue isn't with the bots as of yet. Like Blind said, the forums haven't been hit by a shit storm of bot spam yet and our mods haven't been tested to their limits either, so why so serious about all jumping the gun and going all out to stop a few bots here and there?

Need I remind you that a few of our members actually enjoy the threads created by the bots - they are usually quite humorous, both before and after a moderator has edited the thread.

If you can't handle a thread posted by a bot than always check the 'Todays active topics' page. Look for the thread with the silly name and check that it resides in the 'forum games' forum or site submissions forum. Once you have done that steer clear of that thread for a while, let a mod get to it, and have a pleasant day!

Unless it's extremely simple to implement a way to stop bots posting I say don't waste the time until we Runecrypt get's hit so hard by bot spam I cannot bring myself to read every thread.

We will get a captcha at some point. I.e when we update IPB. Which may or may not happen sometime soon.

yes pls!

The bots at this moment in time sometimes give us humorous topics, and hey its forum activity. It's not out of control, in my opinion. I think it's fun to see the mod edit of their topics.
Raz
i've had experiences with bots getting past captcha so not really sure what difference that would make. i don't really notice bots here? see maybe one every few weeks.. don't see that as much of an issue.
Maarten
The max is usually 2-3 bots a day. But there are loads of days without bots. It's not really a big nuisance to the staff, so I doubt we really need to change anything. I think Kevin created this thread in a whim, since I don't think anyone is really annoyed by them.
Bliz
Yeah, I noticed a lot of those sneaky advertisers lately..
some where funny at first though tongue.gif
