Full Version: Does rc make ad money?
RuneCrypt Forum > The Crypt News > Submissions & Suggestions
I am me and only me
Just wondering, this article got me thinking, does runecrypt actually make any money from the ads it displays, and does it make any difference if we block those ads? I'd be more than willing to unblock them (and I'm sure *nudge nudge* many other people would too) if it meant runecrypt would actually get more money for it's funds.
Matt
Well for whatever reason most forums/fansites tend to keep this information private, but I'm not entiarlly sure why.

RuneCrypt currently costs 165$ / month to run and maintain between server fee's and cpanel integration.

That is VERY expensive, which is why some people may have heard rumors about us looking for a new host. (Seriously, I have yet to find a host that actually charges as much as our current host - I would not recommend them.)

On an "Average" month, RC makes approx 70-90$ from advertisements. That covers about half the cost of the server. (The past 2 months have been FAR below average, but that's just a market trend - sometimes the advertiser just fails to deliver a solid amount of well paying ads).

That means I end up fronting about half the cost of the server, while the ads pay for the other half.

Now to give you a rough idea of how much of an impact ad-block makes.
Lets say we have 10 ads that avarage $1.00cpm each. That means I get 1 dollar for ever 1k views that each of those ads get. Now each ad will have its own limit too how often the same person can say it, so for the sake of keeping it simple we'll limit it too twice a day.

So, lets say this person see's all 10 of those ads, twice a day for 1 month. (effectively the maximum fill rate of those ads for that person.

That 10 ads, 2 views a day = 20 views a day X 30 days = 600 views a month.

Since each of those 10 ads gives me 1$ per 1k views, I just made 60c per ad, or 6$ - from one person.

Now that is a VERY bloated figure, as it is extremely unlikely that 1 person would come close to seeing 10 ads twice a day for a solid month, especially since there are ad prime times etc - You'll see more "Survey" links at some parts of the day then others.. It gets complicated. (Hell, even demographic regions have something to do with it.)

Its very simple really: The ONLY money rc brings in is from ads. Not viewing those ads removes that source of income. Obviously I don't run RC with the intention of making profit - I would have too use a MUCH more invasive advertiser to pull that off. (See RuneHQ's talking ads)

Anyway, I didn't mean to make that post as long as I did, if anyone is actually interested in more in-depth details as too how a site like RuneCrypt brings in money, or random ad stat's I'll post them - but its really all very boring. tongue.gif

So you're saying one person blocking ads isn't making much of a difference?
kreotis
Ad blockers never worked for me anyway.
Kalzilla
I just added Runecrypt to my adblock exceptions list wub.gif
Matt
One person does not make -much- of a difference.

A multitude of "one person's" make a rather large difference. Ad blockers actually do have a very real impact on websites - the only way a none-sales or government commissioned site is able to stay afloat is either via the owners wallet, donations, or advertisement.

tongue.gif Thanks too whomever adds RC to the exception list, honestly our ads are not all that invasive at all. Browser sessions are limited too 3 popup's per day / ip address (Which 99% of popup blockers block anyway) and our banners do not allow audio or flashy lights.

Lately there have been ones that enlarge their dimensions and try to piss me off. This is especially prone to the u.s. army ones.

So, there's really no alternative to a 165$/mo server?
And, do you get money when people actually click on an ad? wink.gif
Saebjorn
I just disabled AdBlock Pro for RuneCrypt. wink.gif

But do we actually have to click them to get RC money? Or just view them?
RSK
ive joined in and done my bit by disabling ad-block on RC wub.gif
Row
Omigod it's not necessary to click these ads?
Matt
Nope no clicking required - I've actually disabled CPC advertisments for the site - meaning clicking makes little to no difference at all.

I'm working on limiting/removing the enlargeing ones. As long as you don't hover over them they shouldn't enlarge - but they are still not something I wanted to have here.

Another brief bit of info: The "Survay" ads that come up are actually for a demographic survey for the site - It would be interesting if everyone took the entire survey. (When the demographic range of a site is known, it makes it easier to sell ad space and obtain higher paying ads) Its not really necessary and the survey is (imo) too long.

Thanks for helping everyone ^^

Alright, I gave into the peer pressure and disabled ad block on runecrypt

I should probably disable chrome's popup blocker for Rc. I'll do that when I get home.

Wow Matt, that's really expensive. I've never paid more than $20 to host a site, so I can't imagine how big this site must be. ohmy.gif Didn't realise that you get money just for me viewing the ads, wow.. what a feeling of contribution I have now.

Wow, sounds like we have a real professional here.

I am cool because I see the ads on our site. Right now it's an ad for american girl dolls.

Runecrypt, the manliest site on the internet.
