30 August, 2009 - Downtime & New Server
As you have most likely noticed, RuneCrypt was offline for approximately 24 hours. This was due to an old exploit in software that allowed one user to hammer the site repeatedly with requests that eventually overloaded the server and caused it to crash. The issue has been resolved, and the user blocked. We apologize for the downtime and any inconveniences caused.
There was one very odd coincidence with this event, which is that we were having a new server set up at the same time as this one crashed. Part of the reason the site was down for so long is that we hoped we could just switch to the new server immediately and use the downtime to our advantage. Unfortunately, we had to work out some kinks with the new server over the last day, so the plan is to make that switch later today or tomorrow if everything runs as scheduled. This does mean that there may be some more downtime as we make the switch. Ideally the site will never truly be offline, we can just switch the location of the server and as it is changing (the process takes up to 24 hours to reach everyone worldwide) some people will be on the "old" runecrypt and some people will be on the "new" runecrypt. Basically, RC will clone itself for a while
Thank you and please bear with us through this process.
