30 August, 2009 - Downtime & New Server

As you have most likely noticed, RuneCrypt was offline for approximately 24 hours. This was due to an old exploit in software that allowed one user to hammer the site repeatedly with requests that eventually overloaded the server and caused it to crash. The issue has been resolved, and the user blocked. We apologize for the downtime and any inconveniences caused.

There was one very odd coincidence with this event, which is that we were having a new server set up at the same time as this one crashed. Part of the reason the site was down for so long is that we hoped we could just switch to the new server immediately and use the downtime to our advantage. Unfortunately, we had to work out some kinks with the new server over the last day, so the plan is to make that switch later today or tomorrow if everything runs as scheduled. This does mean that there may be some more downtime as we make the switch. Ideally the site will never truly be offline, we can just switch the location of the server and as it is changing (the process takes up to 24 hours to reach everyone worldwide) some people will be on the "old" runecrypt and some people will be on the "new" runecrypt. Basically, RC will clone itself for a while smile.gif You won't notice a difference except that some of you may lose a few posts when you are switched to the new server.

Thank you and please bear with us through this process.

Old Runecrypt is badass.

Was the user a member/former member or just some random idiot?

I'm sorry I can't handle random spam any more.

It won't be all that confusing really.

Once the new server is up and running properly, We will make a news post informing everyone that they are currently on "Old crypt" and that anything they do from that point forward will not be on "New Crypt"

Once the backup is completed we will upload that backup onto the new server, and New Crypt will be born. It takes about 24 hours for DNS too update world wide, however I will update our name server right away - however some people (Probably USA) will probably transfer in under an hour.

Once I update the name servers and the transitional period begins, I will edit a link to the new server (Since at this point it will be accessible via ip address, just not by typing www.runecrypt.com).

The new server will contain a news post that says something along the lines of "Welcome to the New Server"

Easy yes? =D

^^This.

Coincidentally, during the time the server was down (I did not know why at the time, doh) I saw part of a long 'episode' of something detailing how this guy used the same method - constant requests to crash a server - to crash Yahoo, eBay, etc...did billions of dollars of damage and got locked up for it.

Coincidence? I think not! ohmy.gif

Its called a DOS its pretty well known eh.gif Normally our server would have detected it and blocked him but we had a tiny little loop hole sad.gif
Matt
Since I never thought it necessary to archive raw server access logs (Our servers ability to automatically block dos-a/ddos-a is really pretty good) I do not have the ability to review more then 24 hours worth of log files.

Since a Dos-A against our server is also an attack against Lunar pages, they took the liberty of blocking that person router side (I Believe) because there are no additional entries in root, or cPanel's IP restriction logs, it is very unlikely that I will be able to determine who the offender was.

Obviously I am now archiving raw access logs, so if this happens again we'll be able to track down the individual responsible. =)

Sorry for the long downtime ~ Since I didn't have access to the server at all It was difficult to determine what actually was happening. Thank Cecchi for getting to the bottom of it as quickly as we did.

Note: Expecting the new server to be up within the next 2-3 days. We will be upgrading to IPB 3.X shortly after the server transition. =)
