As you all know, Obama won the Nobel Prize for Peace a few days ago. What.The.Phoronida. I am truly disappointed by this. The mass media and plebs blindly following Obama I can accept--they're all stupid. But I honestly expected more from the bloody Norwegian Nobel Committee. Last time I checked, the Nobel Prize wasn't for people who were popular or in the news alot the recent years, but for people who actually DID something. I forgot her name; but the 1976 winner of this specific award has already criticised the fact Obama got it.
Because, what has Obama done? According to the Committee, and I quote,
QUOTE
extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and co-operation between peoples.
Source. What the Phoronida? He has done nothing at all. Yes, he has URGED Israel and Palestina to talk. And as we speak, negotiations between those two countries are completely jammed. The only thing he has done is make speeches that are so simple it's beyond comprehension. Yes, a strong Europe is good, yes we need to help the economy, yes ofcourse world peace would be great, but Phoronidaing talking about it and mentioning things that are painfully obvious isn't changing a god damn thing. If I stand up tomorrow and say "Israel and Palestina need to co-operate, so change hope change I'm a Nemertea", will I get a Nobel Prize? No. And maybe the most retarded thing about this is the following: they actually agree with me. I, yet again, quote:
QUOTE
In awarding President Obama the Nobel Peace Prize, the Norwegian committee is honouring his intentions more than his achievements.
.
SourceNow seriously, it's nice that he has
INTENTIONS, but he has done nothing at all to contribute to world peace thus earning this Prize. In my opinion, it's an absolute mockery and a devaluation of the Noble Prize. You may now post.

You won the Phoronidaing Noble Prize for Intergalactic Peace, organised by the Phoronidaing Martian Noble Prize Committee. Congratulations.

I completely agree with you Smoby. When I read that, I was like was dumbfounded. I was like "What did he honestly do to deserve this?"
Obama has done nothing, and I mean nothing to deserve this great prize. This is like a complete joke in my opinion. They gave him the prize for what he is "going to do", not for what he has done. This is complete garbage and an insult. Plus, Obama was a last minute nominee for this and he received it when there were other candidates that actually deserved it.
I honestly never liked Obama much and this makes my feelings towards him even worse. I have no idea what the committee were even thinking when they awarded someone like him with an honorable prize like this. It's so absurd.

Exactly. And apparently, he was sleeping when he got it. I'd very much like to see the list of nominees.

I really can't put into words how much this pisses me the Phoronida off. He hasn't done a god damned thing that warrants him winning the Noble Peace Prize. I mean jesus he's only been in office 9 months, and I personally think it's been a pretty horrid 9 months. To me this kind of diminishes the value and prestige of the award since they awarded it to him for doing nothing.
I was never for Obama to begin with, I just don't agree with anything he's done or anything he plans to do. The fact that he's been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize just frustrates me even further because it seems like he was given it because he can use pretty words and make it seem like he's going to fix everything, when in reality I've yet to see him fix anything. This just re-enforces my belief that people think he's the greatest thing since sliced bread just because he's Barack Obama.

It's actually pretty ironic that Obama's winning the Nobel Peace prize is actually his greatest acheivement in office so far. He absolutely has great intentions but has so far failed to actually do anything. There has to be someone else that is more worthy of getting this award than Obama.

I like Obama and think he'll be a great president. I do however feel that between the world leaders, academics and previous winners who nominate potential winners and the Norwegian academics who compile a shortlist and the final judging committee, they may have made a slight error.

Incorrect Saeb.
Morgan Tsvangirai should have won it. I mean seriously, how many political leaders can you think of would de facto win an election but then to prevent the people of his country being slaughtered by the military would strike a deal with the force who's been oppressing him and his followers, put them in jail for no reason and destroyed the economy for the good of the country?

Winning a nobel peace prize doesn't change anything so if people's feelings about him changed because he won it, that would just be ridiculous.

Let's face it, the Nobel Peace Prize is just now a political tool to show who the people behind the prize favor.
Let's look back at the past 10 years.
Oh, what do we have here?
2002 - Jimmy Carter
2007 - Al Gore
2009 - Barack Obama
Now, I don't know a lot about Jimmy Carter, but Al Gore did... um... he went green. Barack Obama hasn't even had a chance to do anything. Basically, they just want to say that they hate Bush. Jesus Christ, we get it, he was a bad president (not entirely bad in my own eyes, but not ideal at all). I wonder when people are going to stop being butthurt and get the hell over it.

I quite like the swearing thing. Back in 2004/5/6 most of our member base was between 12-18. We've gained very few new, active members since then. As far as I'm aware everyone who posts on our forums is over 16. It seems somewhat insane that you can have sex and until recently buy cigarettes (UK) or drive (Some US states) yet not type the swear words which most of us found big and clever at 12. I can put more vitriol and vehemence into creating a putdown without swearing than I can with, simply because swearing requires no effort.
I loved Crypt back then. But I'm not the same person I was. The progression of life ensures that we change and it is therefore natural that those things we influence change with us. Perhaps unfortunately or perhaps fortunately, without new, younger members joining, the site simply grew up with the rest of us.
You also have to remember that back then, through some freakish occurrence, we managed to have about 100 active members and very few personality clashes. And yet, the ones that were there were so much worse than anything we have now. It's the age old adage of when times are good you're able to gloss over the bad. For instance the vent forum hasn't been used regularly by members of staff for an awfully long time. If I look at the front page of that forum I see posts from 2006 which I would be warning people for if they were made anywhere else. Further to this staff have always been able to bypass filters. All we've really done is make things a little more equal.
But there were still huge cases of drama regularly which inevitably ended in mass flamings (Denic, BDZ, Dryerasesmile, E_A_5_y + Junk etc.) which we just don't have anymore. Whilst we have swearing we don't have it directed at individuals. Somehow previously due to there being rigorous filters you're allowed to tell people to ---- off (Which everyone knows what it is) yet actually saying the word sh
it would get you a warning. I know which one I consider more offensive.
But hey ho. I'm getting distracted.
