So for a while now we've been domino dancing - that's overnow.
Today marks four years for me here at Runecrypt.
Here are my thoughts:
Right now you have a miniscule community. Lackluster personalities and far too much red-tape. The admin doesn't post. Very rarely a decent new topic is made. The colourful personalities that made the place vibrant and exciting have all but left. The popularity of Runecrypt is extremely low. The new kids aren't doing anything to make this place fun and most of the older members have left already, or feel like leaving this very moment.
I for one am moving on.
I've been here for four years and in my opinion that's one year too long. I shouldn't have returned in '09. This place went to shit and it annoyed me. I tried to show you guys - I gave Matt ideas - ideas that had been floating around for years. Nobody listened. Everybody's put all their eggs in one basket - shamrock. For the sake of what Runecrypt used to be like, I hope Shamrock really gives Runecrypt a kickstart. Because this place sure as hell needs it.
And if you get a kickstart - well you're going to need to really put a hell of a lot of time and effort into maintaining the forums. It's a shame that the older, more experienced members are treated like the middle children.
In days gone by, Runecrypt was a phenomally important place for me. I have made many great friendships through Runecrypt. Friendships that have grown and matured. It's a shame that Runecrypt didn't grow with the community - instead it tried to hold the community back, stunting the growth and ultimately causing the problems that we now see so evident today.
Runecrypt has no community.
I was consistently the top poster every day for many months consecutively. Every day that I could have access to my computer I was posting on Runecrypt. Needless to say I couldn't have done it without the others. But soon posting became more difficult. The Admin started to silence us. To smother us. This made things difficult. After many years, we were repayed with belittlement.
We never asked for anything ridiculous. We never demanded things that were outside of the reach of the community.
Even so, quite soon the administration started to impose ridiculous restrictions. It's safe to say that an over-reaction killed the community, killed Runecrypt. The admin was so worried about being 'shut-down' by a clearly inapropriate server-host that his actions actually led to what he was trying to stop. Ironic, isn't it? I find it difficult to understand why having a certain server host (clearly, this is interchangeable and replaceable) was prioritized over having a solid community. Never once did the administration ask for the communities opinion. We could have helped. We could have funded for a proper host. We could have done something.
It's too late now, sadly. The writing is on the wall. It's not the same anymore - and I doubt it ever will be. Sure things change... but this situation didn't have to change this drastically - unless of course, certain people wanted it too.
So better luck next time guys, I hope you don't make the same mistakes again. You're sure as hell going to need some experienced leaders to run your community if it really takes off with Shamrock.
Good bye.
